Across the camp Fetterman and Tyme were in Fettermanâs room, seeing just how fast they could empty a case of Coors beer. Tyme had just taken a large swig out of his and slammed the can on the tabletop.
Fetterman, showing the first signs of becoming drunk, was speaking with a precision that he normally ignored. âIt was a damned good mission, Boom-Boom. A damned good one.â
Tyme nodded, bobbing his head up and down in an exaggerated movement. His face was getting numb. âItâs nice when things work out as well as they did.â
Finally Fetterman said, âHow are you doing?â
Tyme stared at the older man and then asked, âWhat do you mean?â
âI mean, how are you doing now that the mission is over? After what happened on the Ho Chi Minh Trail?â
Tyme stood up, drained his beer and walked over to the table where a half dozen full cans waited. He opened one with a bayonet, took a deep drink and then turned back to face Fetterman. Tyme wasnât sure how he felt about it. He hadnât really thought about it, and at the moment he wasnât sure he wanted to think about it.
âI thought we had gotten beyond worrying about what happened there,â said Tyme.
âI donât think you have,â responded Fetterman. âI saw the look on your face. We didnât have time to talk about it then, but we do now. And weâve both had enough to drink to be able to talk about it.â
âThereâs nothing to talk about, really.â
âCome on, Boom-Boom. This is your old master sergeant. I know better than that.â
âI was just surprised that it was a woman. Thatâs all. I hadnât expected it.â
âJustin. Talk to me.â
Tyme took a deep breath. âShit, she was so young.â
âAnd carrying a weapon, along with supplies for the VC, so they could go on killing our people.â
âBut she thought she was safe. She wasnât paying any attention to what was happening. She didnât have a chance.â
Fetterman finished his beer and crushed the tin can effortlessly with one hand. He tossed the remains into the corner of his hootch.
âOkay. I see weâre not going to get anywhere on this, so Iâll just throw out a few comments for general consumption.
âFirst of all, I know that you wouldnât have been greatly upset if the enemy soldier had been male. Even if he had been young. I suppose you can make a case for the woman not being on the Ho Chi Minh Trail because she wanted to be there. She was probably drafted and ordered to be there. But thatâs the same as it is for a lot of men who fight wars. If it were left to choice, very few men would ask to fight in a war. But no one ever gives you a choice.
âSo we can ignore that argument. She was there, in the wrong place at the wrong time, and itâs too bad that she had to die. But it was better than your dying in her place. Tough on Co Cong is just tough on Co Cong.
